Be careful and learn to prevent falls with expo partner Central Baptist Health.

Falls are the leading cause of injury deaths to older people, yet most falls are preventable. Seniors can learn their own personal fall risk and find out how they can reduce that risk at the Baptist Health “Don’t Fall Fair,” a free event scheduled from 1-4 p.m. Sept. 18 at Central Baptist Church, 110 Wilson Downing Road.

Screenings will include a balance assessment, medication review, vision screening and an assessment for orthostatic hypotension, a type of low blood pressure that occurs when a person stands up from sitting or lying down.

A home fall risk presentation also is scheduled.

Exercise is one of the best ways to prevent falls, and staff with Baptist Health HealthwoRx Fitness and Wellness Center will be on hand with information on its array of Silver Sneakers and other exercise offerings designed for seniors of all ability levels. Demonstrations of Tai Chi, an ancient Chinese form of exercise with gentle, flowing movements that has been shown to improve balance, also are planned.

No pre-registration is necessary.
