A free tax preparation service from AARP Foundation that helped low to moderate income Kentuckians get nearly $19 million in refunds last year opened its doors recently.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, in its 49th year, is the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, offering free tax preparation help to anyone, especially those who are 50 and older, who cannot afford a tax preparation service.

In Lexington, AARP Tax Aide is available at public library branches: from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Mondays and Fridays at the Beaumont branch; 9:30- 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Northside branch; 9:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., Wednesdays and Thursdays at the Eastside branch and 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays at the Tates Creek branch.

Tax-Aide, which is offered free of charge, is available to AARP members and non-members and includes more than 5,000 locations in neighborhood libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers nationwide. Since 1968, Tax-Aide has helped nearly 50 million low- to moderate-income taxpayers.

“Tax-Aide is an excellent example of something that AARP Foundation does which might surprise a lot of people,” said Ron Bridges, AARP Kentucky state director. “This program is a free resource that is helping put millions of dollars back into the pockets of Kentuckians.”

Staffed by almost 450 volunteers who are trained and IRS-certified each year to ensure their knowledge of revisions to the U.S. tax code, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide assisted more than 31,000 Kentuckians file their federal and state returns in 2016. Volunteers helped Kentuckians get a total Earned Income Tax Credit of over $3.6 million. There are 71 convenient locations in Kentucky.
