When the General Assembly convenes Jan. 3, AARP advocates will be on the ground in Frankfort, pressing for legislation important to Kentuckians age 50-plus.

To support the estimated 648,000 family caregivers in the state, AARP is seeking passage of the Kentucky Caregivers Act, which would provide information and training for family caregivers before a loved one comes home from a hospital stay.

Another priority is developing a “work and save” option for nearly 795,000 private-sector workers whose employers do not offer a retirement savings plan. Tax-deferred savings through payroll deductions can supplement Social Security retirement income and keep many retirees out of poverty.
