The 10th annual Markesbery Symposium on Aging and Dementia will be held virtually this year on Saturday, Oct. 31.
It is free and open to the public but registration is required.
The keynote presentation is by Dr. Maria Carrillo, chief scientific officer of the National Alzheimer’s Association. She’ll be speaking about “Advancing the Science: The latest in Alzheimer’s and Dementia Research.”
The program begins at 10 a.m. with a welcome by Linda Van Eldik, director of the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging and Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, University of Kentucky.
The keynote address is at 10:05 a.m.
At 11 a.m., Dr. Daniela Moga, associate professor, Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science; Assistant Dean for Research, College of Pharmacy, University of Kentucky, will speak on “My medications and why should I know about them.”
At 11:15, Dr. Pete Nelson will talk about, “LATE: What It Is, Why It’s Important and How We Might Beat It.” Dr. Nelson is Professor and Director of Neuropathology, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Neuropathology Core Director, UK Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, Associate Director, Sanders-Brown Center on Aging.
An “Ask the Expert” session will be held at 11:30 a.m. and will include Dr. Greg Jicha, professor of neurology, associate director of Sanders-Brown Center on Aging.
The Markesbery Symposium is named in honor and memory of the late William R. Markesbery, MD, founding Director of the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging and Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.
Dr. Markesbery’s legacy of groundbreaking research has formed the bedrock for our quest to understand and treat Alzheimer’s disease and to improve the quality of life of the older adults.
In the sessions for both the scientific and community audience, you will have the opportunity to hear clinicians and researchers from the University of Kentucky and other institutions share current findings, trends, and latest updates on dementia and aging disorders, particularly as related to Alzheimer’s disease.
